Abstract

The use of electronic variable speed drives is increasingly used for energy savings. The case study of the use of variable speed drives for 200 KW motors used to move the blades of an air force for a cooling tower is presented. The research is descriptive through an empirical case study based on a thermodynamic analysis of the possibilities of energy savings by varying the rotation speed and, therefore, the air flow in a cooling tower belonging to a combined cycle for the generation of electrical energy in a plant located in the north of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The study aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the implementation, as well as the usual problems to be solved from a technical point of view.
