Abstract
Information on the behavior of medium-rise buildings located on top of cliffs is not extensive. Sometimes an incorrect practice of structural design of these buildings is carried out considering that said structures were founded on a flat surface, but not considering their proximity to the edge of the cliff itself and neither the interaction between the soil strata of the cliff and the structure. of the building. The causes involved in the problem stem from the nature of the building, the passive thrust produced by the weight of the building that is amplified in an earthquake, and the vibrations produced by the vehicular flow near the area; on the other hand, the seismic vulnerability translated into the type of soil on the edge of the cliffs and their location according to the seismic zoning. In this research, an analysis methodology for buildings on top of cliffs is presented, including time history analysis of a ten-story building located near a cliff with scaled records close to the building considering the strata of the cliff to know the behavior of the structure. As a result, there are amplifications of internal forces in the structural elements obtained due to the interaction between the soil structure of the cliff and the building. The investigation shows that the effect that occurs in structural elements of the ten-story building such as plates and columns exceed the limits established by the regulations that govern the place, which can generate structural failures in the building.
