Abstract

The interaction of the electromagnetic field with normal incidence on an infinite non-magnetized homogeneous and isotropic dielectric cylinder housed in an absorbing medium is analyzed under the solution of Maxwell's equations. Analytical solutions are developed for the extinction (Qe), dispersion (Qs), and absorption (Qa) efficiencies, for different complex refractive indices corresponding to different materials found in the literature. The extinction, scattering, and absorption efficiencies are derived from the near field solutions at the surface of the studied particle. The results show that, although the absorbing medium significantly reduces the scattering efficiency, and to a lesser extent the extinction behavior, it ultimately has little effect on the absorption efficiency.
