Abstract
Despite global efforts, female representation in science and engineering disciplines remains low. This study investigates the perception of gender barriers faced by women and girls in Colombia in accessing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This work uses a survey designed to capture perceptions and experiences of discrimination among female students and young professionals to identify the main perceived barriers that deter women from pursuing these disciplines. The survey collects data on demographic factors, knowledge of STEM fields, perceived limitations, career choice factors, personal interests, and experiences of gender-based discrimination and violence. Preliminary results suggest that lack of role models, gender stereotypes, and limited access to resources are critical factors. This study not only contributes to the understanding of gender dynamics in STEM areas in Colombia but also supports the development of more effective strategies to foster more equitable participation in these fields.
