Abstract
A conceptual design of internal combustion engines for renewable and alternative gaseous fuels is presented; the mathematical modelling is based on thermodynamic principles applied to Otto cycles for spark-ignition engines and on the results of experimental tests conducted on two engines; an octane rating research engine and other optimized for biogas. Validation of the mathematical model of design was carried out with a third, larger-scale engine for biogas. It was found that the fuels with the highest capacity to produce work are biogas and natural gas.
