Abstract
This paper studies the feasibility of using Jatropha curcas (JC) seed as raw material to obtain vegetable oil through an innovative process of acid hydrolysis with pretreatment. The stages of the process designed for the extraction of the oil from the seed were: pretreatment of the Jatropha curcas seed, drying, grinding, sieving, settling, acid hydrolysis and separation of the oil obtained. An extraction yield of 56.4% was obtained, the oil quality was determined by measuring the acid value (16.1 mgKOH/mg), a peroxide value (15.7 meq O2/kg) and the iodine value (83.88). The content of fatty acids present in the oil was also determined, with oleic acid (41.38%) being the most predominant fatty acid, followed by linoleic (31.55%) and palmitic (16.59%), respectively. The oil obtained after being treated could serve as a raw material in the production of biodiesel, this being one of its main applications because the presence of some anti-nutrient content does not make it an oil for edible purposes. In addition, by-products are obtained that can be used to generate others with greater added value
