Abstract

Currently, plastic is one of the most abundant and massive materials on the planet, and in recent years its use has accelerated in industries due to its elasticity, flexibility and malleability. This has made it an indispensable material with multiple applications in different industries such as medical, electronics and food. In addition, it is used by consumers to carry groceries, collect household waste, store clothes and even dispose of pet waste. Consequently, all this excessive use of plastic both in industries and in everyday life has affected the environment, because its degradation process takes between 100 and 1,000 years, so it is considered a very slow decomposition material and long term. It is estimated that every minute, one million plastic bottles are sold worldwide, and on average a plastic bottle takes about 450 years to decompose. If it is not outdoors, the figure is closer to 1,000 years (National Geographic, 2022). For this reason, the governments of many countries have begun to create and promote campaigns to raise public awareness of the importance of caring for and protecting the environment. Likewise, they have been in charge of formulating joint strategies to counteract and mitigate environmental problems such as the excessive use of plastic, and to create products and services in which plastic can be replaced with materials that are friendlier and more sustainable for our planet. This project is focused on a proposal for a biodegradable ecological bag, based on natural products such as starch. This initiative will seek to provide an effective solution to environmental pollution, promote awareness of the importance of avoiding the use of this material, contribute to the reduction of plastic waste and encourage the marketing and use of biodegradable bags as an alternative to improve living conditions.
