Abstract
Growing concern about the environmental impact of industrial activities has driven the search for sustainable solutions, including implementing green supply chains (GSCM). This systematic review analyzes the efficiency of GSCMs in adopting sustainable practices in their logistics operations, focusing on using renewable energy and machine learning technologies. 80 investigations published between 2019 and 2023 were analyzed in databases Scopus and Science Direct that met the established inclusion criteria were selected. Results show that Industry 4.0 technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data analytics, and artificial intelligence, positively impact the efficiency and flexibility of GSCMs. These technologies make it possible to provide accurate data to predict and meet customer demands, leading to better economic performance. The study highlights the importance of considering three dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social) in the GSCM implementation process. Digitization and big data analytics enable accurate tracking of key performance indicators across each dimension, helping organizations proactively identify and address potential issues and improve overall performance across all business areas. However, implementing GSCM presents challenges, especially in the technological field. Analysis of the database revealed five key categories of challenges: economy, organization, environment, technology, and society. Technology accounted for 38% of the obstacles, underscoring the importance of technological innovation in achieving GSCM implementation. In conclusion, adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, such as IoT, is essential for developing efficient GSCM. Study highlights the importance of prioritizing technological innovation to overcome the challenges of implementing GSCM and achieving transition toward a more sustainable production system.
