Abstract
The general objective of this article is to propose a solution that contributes to mitigating the environmental impact derived from poor garbage collection in Panama City. In this research, we describe the problem through direct observation and use surveys as a data collection method. Subsequently, we propose a solution that involves the implementation of a software prototype to improve the waste collection and management system in the city. For the development of the prototype, we used ultrasonic sensors to determine the real-time capacity of the garbage tanks, sending this information through the Arduino Uno R4 development board that includes an internet connection module. Additionally, we used the web-based prototyping tool “Figma” to create the visual part of the software and added the MapQuest Application Programming Interface (API) services with the Python programming language to calculate the different routes that can make a collection truck. As a result, we obtained a functional prototype of a sensor that measures the real-time capacity of garbage containers, a visual prototype of the web application and a functional algorithm that calculates the best route and displays it through an interactive map.
