Abstract

Abstract– The objective of this research was to determine the physical-mechanical properties of Lego bricks and compare them with the physical-mechanical properties of conventional bricks, by making 250 Lego bricks measuring 23.30 cm x 12.70 cm x 8 cm. This research has a quantitative experimental approach. This research applied the regulations stipulated in Standard E.070 Masonry of 2006, carrying out tests of dimensional variation, warping, absorption, suction and compression resistance (masonry unit and piles). The results obtained in the tests were the following: in terms of dimensional variation, the clay bricks showed an increase in Length = +10.14%, Height = +10.80% and Width = +4.43%, while the Lego bricks presented a increase in Length = +5.44%, Height = +11.25% and Width = +4.83%. Regarding warping, in both cases a concavity and convexity ≥ 1.1 mm was obtained. The absorption was 19.12% for clay bricks and 18.74% for Lego bricks. Regarding suction, the clay bricks registered 79.46 gr/200cm²/min, while the Lego bricks obtained 51.56 gr/200cm²/min. Regarding the compressive strength of the masonry units, the clay bricks reached 49.31 kg/cm², while the Lego bricks reached 100.93 kg/cm². On the other hand, the compressive strength of the piles, the clay bricks reached 51.92 kg/cm², while the Lego bricks reached 32.92 kg/cm². In conclusion, it was observed that the Lego bricks showed improvements in all the physical and mechanical properties evaluated, except for the compressive strength of piles. Key word: Lego brick, attachable, self-adjusting, ecological and economical.
