Abstract

– The lack of products on the supermarket shelves in Costa Rica had a significant impact on the income of this type of business in 2021. However, only part of the whole products that are displayed on supermarket shelves have an impact on the company's finances as a consequence of consumer preferences. The objective of this work was to determine the economic impact on supermarket finances due to the lack of products in gondola in 2021. The frequent pattern recognition methodology was used as a data mining tool to identify the preferences of clients in the purchase of products and to determine which products are frequently bought together, in such a way that if one of those products is not on the shelf, the customer could leave the supermarket, impacting the income due to the non-sale of all the products in the group. The results of the case study indicated that the projected loss in sales due to the lack of products in gondola is estimated to be close to forty-six thousand three hundred and seventy-four dollars per year, with a projected decrease in supermarket profits of twelve thousand six hundred and eighty-four dollars.
