Abstract:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the biodegradability of bioplastics based on oca (Oxalis tuberosa) starch using as reference the UNE-EN 13432:2001 Standard as well as the application of digital imaging by using the free software ImageJ. The samples were subjected to composting conditions, evaluating the weight loss at different times by the gravimetric method and their disintegrability by imaging analysis. The results show a weight loss of 90% in 101 days of composting, with a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.8774. While a 74% of disintegrability was reached at day 89, with a R2 of 0.7489. The results highlight the potential of applying the imaging analysis as a non-invasive, inexpensive, and easy-to-use method to predict the biodegradability in starch-based bioplastics.
