Abstract:

The present research is the follow up of a study on reading habits among students at Universidad Politécnica Salesiana at Guayaquil. Results showed that the students’ preferences for reading and library utilization are below the surveyed average. These outcomes lead to identify the new ways and spaces for reading preferred by undergraduate students. The simple observation technique was applied and focus groups were held with the attendance of students from different levels and majors, what revealed the raising inclination for mobile devices and the ease of use in the teaching and learning processes. Based on the experiences of other institutions in the use of mobile apps for education, and the focus groups findings, a feasibility assessment is carried out to analyze the implementation of m-learning features that would allow an easy access to the university digital repository from mobile devices as a source for academic reading.
