This research had the objective to study current uses and potential benefits of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the informal economy and to contribute to the development and capacity building with the interest of improving productivity and increase of workers to this sector. In the first phase, a case study was developed in the community of Calidonia, in Panama City, that allowed the characterization of informal activity and the identification of priority areas for intervention. In the second phase, based from initial diagnosis some training oriented towards the creation and strengthening of ICT skills combined with capacity building activities in business management was offered. A process model to facilitate the replicability of the project to virtually any other group of informal workers in other areas or geographical regions of the country was proposed.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo estudiar el uso actual y el potencial beneficio de las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) en el sector informal de la economía y contribuir al desarrollo y fortalecimiento de capacidades con el interés de mejorar la productividad y el ingreso de los trabajadores de este sector. En la primera fase se realizó un estudio de caso, en la comunidad de Calidonia, en la ciudad de Panamá, que permitió la caracterización de la actividad informal y la identificación de áreas prioritarias de intervención. En la segunda fase, a partir del diagnóstico inicial se ofrecieron las capacitaciones orientadas hacia la creación y fortalecimiento de habilidades en TIC combinadas con actividades de desarrollo de capacidades en gestión de negocios. Se propuso un proceso modelo que facilite la replicabilidad del proyecto a prácticamente cualquier otro grupo de trabajadores informales, en otras áreas o regiones geográficas del país.
