Abstract

The need for innovation in educative processes, driven by global changes in political, economic, scientific, social and cultural development has led to the academic community, especially at higher education, take a strategic view to the training process with the aim to predict the behavior of the variables that have a decisive influence on its dynamics and to develop an overview of the context in which professionals play in the future. In this regard, the organizations that support this profession have worked with academics and industry representatives to reach a consensus on the role of engineering in the development of society with emphasis on some key elements that should take this discipline to the defining their own future. This document contains a review of these challenges and an integrative proposal for the characteristics or competencies to be met by an engineer to respond to these challenges.
