Mitigation of Flood Hazards - An Integrated Drainage Library
Abstract:
Flood disasters have been the major cause of property losses in the
country in the past, not to account for the life threat it continuously
presents to those living in flood prone areas. Inappropriate drainage
infrastructure due to lack of engineering design or insufficient design
capacity for extreme events continuously pose a hazard to public and
private property. Advances in
hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design criteria not necessarily
reach on time the state of practice in various Latin-American countries
and universities.
A research effort sponsored by the US Federal Emergency Management
Agency allowed the development of an electronic drainage library which
contains the public domain of the state of the practice in local and
federal agencies in Puerto Rico and the United States.
The Electronic Drainage Library was designed in a user friendly
html platform. It contains a
browser to navigate through twelve chapters of state of the practice
documentation of policies, procedures and methodologies been established
by state and federal agencies. Over
75 hydrologic and hydraulic computer programs containing their
documentation, tutorials and codes are included.
This effort has the objective of facilitating the rapid access to
the state of practice to teachers, students, faculty and the general
public. It also represents an excellent reference for civil engineering
hydrologic and hydraulic courses.
