Paper Title:

Project MASTT: A Model Program to Provide Teacher Training

Abstract:

Project M.A.S.T.T. (Mathematics/Applied Sciences Teacher Training) is a collaboration of the NASA/JFK Space Center, the Miami-Dade and Daytona Volusia County Public Schools, the Public School System of Puerto Rico, Turabo University, Bethune-Cookman College, and Florida International University.

The MASTT program is mainly focused on training elementary and middle school educators in the subjects of science and mathematics through the learning module presentations in a classroom setting, as well as through traditional training workshops.

A meaningful Project MASTT accomplishment is to effectively disseminate, through its training presentations, NASA’s acquired scientific knowledge, its on-line resources, and educational materials and products.

By offering its training services to teachers in science, mathematics ,engineering, and technology areas, the program greatly contributes to bringing a significant improvement to the elementary and middle school teacher preparation.  Project MASTT provides its trainees with the vast quantities of high quality lesson plans, hands-on labs, experiments, and other educational activities.  “Hands-on” kits and print materials pertaining to the presentations are provided to each teacher and student.

Improving the quality of teaching in science,  and mathematics, through program training presentations, leads to greater student interest and achievement in science, mathematics, engineering and technology fields, as well as retention of the concepts they learn.
