ABSTRACT

Biometrics is the technology for individual identification based on the behavioral and physiological characteristics. Biometrics is based on automated methods of identification and it makes use of physiological characteristics like the fingerprints, signature, voice, retinal, face, iris, hand geometry etc. Behavioral characteristics are traits that are inherent or acquired by an individual. Because of the wide scope of application, biometric technologies have become an important source of research avenues.

One of the major issues that the current day world is facing is that of security. The September 11 attacks have made Security an inevitable and most demanding issue that requires prime attention. Due to the increase in security breaches and frauds, the need for high-level identification has become very prominent. Due to the identification methods used in Biometrics, this technology can be incorporated in places where security is the most important issue like military, banking, confidential transactions, federal, state and local governments, Homeland Security, security in enterprise infrastructure. But Biometrics need not be restricted to such areas. It can be used to provide solutions for anything from confidential financial transactions to privacy in data access.[2].

Biometric technologies find application for authentication purposes in workstation, server or domain access, single sign on, application logon, and remote access to data, Web Security etc. When Biometrics is integrated with technologies like digital signatures and smart cards the level of security provided is outstanding and will definitely monopolize the existing method in security applications.

This article discusses digital signatures and Biometric signatures. Signature Verification, keystroke dynamics and speaker verification are examples of behavioral characteristics. Signature verification is a technology that uses the dynamics of signature like speed, pressure, angle etc to authenticate a person. It is used in business applications where signature is accepted as a valid source of authentication [3].
