technology (ICT) through construction firms Abstract: Most practitioners and academics are beginning to realise the
importance of
implementing information and communication technology (ICT) through
construction organisations. Many identify factors influencing the success
of ICT implementation. However few explain the drivers and constraints on
ICT diffusion through construction firms. As a part of our research
project, this paper aims to help the IT project manager understand the
constraints on the diffusion of ICT through construction firms. Two case
studies of web-based document management and one case study of intranet
document management are used to support our explanation. The constraints
on ICT diffusion are classified into organisational level, individual
level and group level. The result shows the constraints at organisational
level are business need, commitment from other project participants,
standard of ICT, and security problems. Next, constraints at individual
level are shown to be basic computer experience, time! to learn and unclear benefits of using ICT. Finally, the
constraints at group level are sharing time, personal contact and
geographical distance. As an understanding of these constraints may help
the IT project manager become more aware of the possible delays of ICT
implementation through construction firms solutions for these constraints
are proposed in the paper.
