Abstract:

Abstract– Beef production has been one of the most sustained economic development activities in Costa Rica, allowing not only the supply of meat to satisfy the diet of the population, but also allowing the commercialization by the supermarket chains of products and byproducts on a significant scale. The problem of determining the number of cattle heads that a supermarket chain should acquire monthly to maximize the return on investment is a complex problem to solve. Deterministic mathematical modeling combined with a simulation model results in a powerful optimization procedure that contributes significantly to the solution of the problem. The objective of this document is to present a mixed methodology that combines a single period mathematical inventory model with a simulation model in order to determine the amount of livestock that a supermarket chain should acquire monthly to maximize the return on investment.
