Paper Title:

Helping the young engineering faculty to understand the peer-review process

Abstract:

Much of the academic success of young faculty in engineering departments depends on publishing papers in prestigious journals. And much of getting published depends on the peer-review process, about which young faculty does not have any experience. This paper reports on efforts made by the author in Puerto Rico to close this information gap, so that new faculty members and doctoral students may understand how the peer-review process works. Four aspects are emphasized in the presentation. First, a seminar on peer-review has been developed by the author, and a summary of the activities is given in the text. Second, some empirical evidence has been obtained about differences between experts and novices performing reviews of engineering manuscripts. Third, empirical evidence about the actual contents of reviews has been obtained and analyzed. Fourth, recommendations about the analysis of papers and reviewer texts are made using a SWAT technique.
