Paper Title:

Defacement Attacks: frequency, range and motivation

Abstract:

Defacement attacks are attacks that deface a website, i.e., either change the main web-page destination or add pages that do not comply to the site's agenda. The Internet is routinely targeted by such attacks, and their frequency, range and motivation are great indication on how to better understand the attackers, as well as good hints as to what steps should be taken, if any, to stop or render these attacks harmless. This paper uses data available online to draw an instantaneous picture of the state of defacement attacks, with the intention to derive methods to defend against them.
