A Linux based Solution for a research computing Lab environment.

Abstract:

Managing and maintaining a research lab can be a difficult and tedious task when there are many computer systems and users. Usually, centralized control can be achieved using computers as servers to control resources accessed by computer users. The cost of setting up these servers can be expensive if commercial Operating Systems are used that require purchased licenses. This paper describes how a computing environment for a scientific research lab was setup that requires little maintenance by implementing Linux to manage resources and provide a secure workable environment for users. The architecture of the lab and the software tools utilized to manage resources was also discussed along with the problems encountered during implementation.
